Workshop on International cooperation projects in Support to Research and Innovation Policies and Competence Building: Conclusions for LA
The Workshop on International cooperation projects in support to Research and Innovation Policies and Competence Building was held the 16 and 17 of June in Brussels. The event was organized by the European Commission's DG Research's Directorate for International Cooperation (INCO) and it targeted four regions: The Mediterranean Region, Sub-Sahara Africa, South-East Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean Region.
The LA-Caribbean session counted with the participation of different initiatives were Pro-Ideal and Pro-Ideal plus project were also mentioned as collaboration partners. (See the Eularinet presentation by M.A. Macías García)The main messages that came out from the LA and Caribbean session focused on Target achievement (NCPs, SICAs), Impacts on policy dialogue and at institutional level, the importance of the regional dimension to facilitate the internationalisation of activities and create leverage/critical mass, Grant schemes activated through open calls to ensure motivation, fairness and leverage, and a structured framework for synergies and collaborations .
Some of the outcomes and recommendations were to Increase networking effectiveness and reinforce intra-regional cooperation (BTSF, EUCARINET), to promote intersectoral education/training activities to nurture a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers (EDULINK) and to provide better (more systematic and comprehensive) information.

International Conference: ICT Challenges for Innovation, 7‐ 8 June, Santiago
The International Conference “ICT Challenges for Innovation” will bring together representatives from the industry, government and national research, with the aim of exploring and proposing instruments, mechanisms and strategies to foster collaboration in R+D+i in the field of ICT with the European Union.The Conference is organized by CHIEP II, FORESTA, and EULARINET.

UNESCO Science Report
UNESCO published its Science Report 2010. Here are some key findings:
- Research and development: USA, Europe and Japan increasingly challenged by emerging countries
- The USA and Europe still lead the global science research effort, but their future is uncertain
- Asia leaping forward in science and technology, but Japan feels the global recession

EU Green Paper and consultation on research and innovation funding
The European Commission released on 9 February a Green Paper on future options and priorities with regard to research and innovation funding. In addition, the Commission announced that it is engaging into a major consultation exercise, in particular about the topics listed in its press release. The Green Paper and consultation include all EU policy instruments in the field of research and innovation funding, i.e. the new framework programme (FP8), Competitiveness and Innovation Fund (CIP), cohesion funds and European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a package worth in total more than 140 billion EUR.
